Appalachian Life Workshops was founded in 2002 with the hope of keeping alive the nearly-lost handcraft and woodworking traditions of early Appalachia. Our hands-on workshops are from one to five days in length and are specifically designed to offer you an experience reminiscent of a time when life was simpler and people took the time to make what they needed by hand. We use only traditional hand tools in our teaching (such as a froe, draw knife, and adze), many of which are a hundred years old or older. Our current schedule includes Weaving White Oak Baskets, Harvesting and Weaving Hickory Bark, Making Poplar Bark Baskets, Spoon Carving, Decorative Spoon Carving, and Chair Making. At the end of each workshop you will take home one or more items you have created with your very own hands! Appalachian Life Workshops is located on 70 beautiful acres on a 100-year-old homestead in Middle Tennessee, approximately 45 miles southeast of Nashville. All of our workshops include lunch, and primitive camping is available. For those less adventurous, plenty of hotels and restaurants are available 15 minutes away in Murfreesboro, TN.
